Samsung is expanding the March 2023 security update to the Galaxy S22 series in more and more markets, globally. Earlier, the company rolled out the One UI 5.1 to Galaxy S22, which didn’t include a fix or improvement for the battery-draining problem, but it’s not the same case in March 2023.

Due to so-called (Exynos, Samsung Foundry) chipset and printing process concerns, select Galaxy S22 units have problems like inefficient battery life and abnormal drain. Users continuously report bad battery performance and overheating issues on their Galaxy S22 (vanilla, Plus, and Ultra).

Everything was fine prior to the December 2022 security patch, which incredibly generated battery life complaints. Samsung tried to fix the problems with January and February firmware updates, but it didn’t happen at all. Consumers hoped, One UI 5.1 will have some enhancements, but, the battery drain remained unfixed.

“5.1 has been optimized.. 29 hours screen off time, never got anywhere near that before & I’ve had this phone since launch” – Source

After installing the March 2023 security patch, some consumers reported that their Galaxy S22 smartphone’s battery efficiency is currently in its best state. Some said that they are having great battery life, which is at its best since the launch.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

“Agreed. Had a full day yesterday and didn’t charge my phone once. Didn’t have power saving on for any of it, had auto brightness on, limited at 85% charge. Always On Display on. Not a single problem. OneUI 5.1 has made this phone like new.” – Source

One UI 5.1 included a lot of under-the-hood improvements for Galaxy devices. Since it was a major One UI upgrade, the software system requires some time to get optimized with the hardware, native functions and installed applications.

“Thank you! I have other devices, but as I clearly said I never got screen off/idle time like this before, which is crazy. 2 weeks ago the phone wasn’t making it a whole day (7 am-midnight) now it got 29 hours on idle which is crazy.” – Source

Consumers didn’t praise One UI 5.1’s battery life, but positive feedback started to emerge after Samsung’s March 2023 firmware update. There are two factors; Samsung brought improvements to battery and One UI got optimized with time and new firmware.

“i think the S22U battery gotten better aftet some update or some stuff. charged it this morning at around 30%. and checked the usage, realise it got like 5:30 Screen on time (gaming) and 18 hrs screen off time. seems to be better when i first got it and was actively playing around with battery management stuff. screenshot below, not sure why the post wont let me upload screenshot.” Source

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 could come with a bigger battery than its predecessor. The company appears to be focussing on the development of new products that will be unveiled at August Unpacked. However, folks over at GalaxyClub spotted the battery unit of Samsung’s next smartwatch.

According to the information, the standard Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 packs a bigger battery than the Galaxy Watch 5. The company has reportedly submitted the battery to South Korea’s certification authority, and the document reveals a worthy upgrade.

Samsung has also got certification for both of the submitted batteries, which bear model numbers SM-R93x and SM-R94x. Different model numbers refer to different variants (sizes) of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 smartwatch.

It has been revealed that the Galaxy Watch 6 40mm battery (EB-BR935ABY) has a typical capacity of 300 mAh, while the rated capacity is 295 mAh. Pay attention, the vanilla Galaxy Watch 5 features a battery with a typical capacity of 285mAh and a rated capacity of 276mAh.

On the flip side, the 44mm variant’s battery appears to have a typical capacity of 425 mAh, and a rated capacity is 412 mAh. Notably, the Galaxy Watch 5’s 44mm model’s battery has a typical capacity of 410 mAh and a rated capacity of 397 mAh.

Since the Korean tech giant is bringing bigger batteries with its next-generation wearable devices, the upgrade is not too big. Still, it can be seen as a significant change as the company strictly follows the policy of maintaining the size, thickness, and appearance of Galaxy devices.

Eyes on Watch 6 Pro

Earlier, it was revealed that Samsung is taking inspiration from Apple Watch and Google’s Pixel Watch to design its Galaxy Watch 6. As per leaks, the upcoming wearable device(s) may bring a curved glass display, ditching the flat panels.

Galaxy Watch 5 Pro should also get a sequel as Apple already brought the Watch Ultra with an eye-watering price. The Pro model should also come with a bigger battery and enhanced hardware to deliver better health features and long-lasting performance.

Samsung’s software department is as solid as Apple and Google’s, which proved with Android 13 rollout. Besides, various Galaxy devices have also received January 2023 security update, which reportedly improved battery life of the Galaxy S23 series.

Galaxy S23 smartphone users noticed that the battery life has significantly improved after installing the January 2023 security update. Several consumers reported sluggish battery performance after the last month’s software update.

The sluggish battery life issue didn’t solve with the factory reset and Android cache cleaning. It was reported that the software system kept all apps and services active even when they are not in use. If apps continue to run in the background, it’s funny to hope for better battery life.

With the January 2023 Android update, the South Korean tech giant may have included code changes and system improvements as part of bringing betterment to the Galaxy S22 series. Not only the battery life but the charging quickness is also improved with the January update.

Samsung S22 January 2023 update

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 is equipped with a 3700mAh battery, the Galaxy S22 Plus brings a 4500mAh battery, whereas the Galaxy S22 Ultra brings a 5000mAh battery. With better software optimization, Samsung offers all-day-long battery life in regular use cases.

Since the January 2023 security patch rollout is still underway, we guess, the update could soon be available in all markets. Moreover, the One UI 5.1 update is also testing on the S22 series devices, which will surely bring major battery and performance improvements.

Samsung One UI 5.0 Maximize Battery Life Tips

Close Unused Background App

If we use only one app for a long time, then the battery runs out soon and at one time we have to put it on charging. Think, many times we allow many apps to run in the background, so how much battery does it consume in our smartphone? Due to this, the issues of battery drain and heating start occurring.

That’s why it is important to close unused background apps to save the battery of your smartphone.

Adjust Display Settings

Obviously, the high display brightness affects your eyes and decreases your smartphone battery. That’s why dark mode and brightness slider have been given in smartphones so that we can adjust the brightness according to our own and save our smartphone from battery drain.

To reduce battery usage and make your display more comfortable for the eyes, you can adjust screen brightness or turn on Dark Mode. To do so, you have to open your smartphone’s Settings >> Display >>now you can turn on Dark Mode and adjust brightness.

However, you can also adjust brightness and turn on the dark mode through Quick Panel.

Enable Power Saving Mode

Samsung offers Power saving mode for Galaxy devices which allows users to use limited only selected apps as well as limit all background activity to make your battery last longer in any critical situation. It turns off Always on Display, decreases the brightness by 10%, limits CPU speed to 70%, and turns off 5G.

You can easily enable Power saving mode on your One UI 5.0-based Galaxy device, just need to open Settings >> Scroll down and tap on Battery and device care >> click on Battery >> press on Power saving option >> Turn on the toggle. It is done, you can also manage its several options.

One UI 5.0 is this year’s biggest release by Samsung after the Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Flip 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series flagship products. As the One UI 5.0 software is now official and set to leave the Beta stage later this month, Samsung fans are now thinking about the Galaxy S23 series flagship.

Samsung could launch the Galaxy S23 series flagship sometime in February next year, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra appears to be coming as just a clone of the S22 Ultra. In the battery department, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is tipped to feature a 5000mAh capacity, is it sufficient?

Before going ahead, there’s the biggest thing to specify that the phone’s backup is not only reflected by the battery’s capacity. The mAh count unquestionably matters when it comes to the phone’s battery backup while software optimization plays a major role.

Use of larger batteries in smartphones leads manufacturers to increase the thickness and weight as well as sacrifice the design. There is a quite low chance of battery capacity upgrade in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but, Samsung will surely make it sufficient with improvements in One UI 5.1, the next Android 13-based skin.

Samsung S23 Ultra Battery

Leaked S23 Ultra battery

Quick Flashback:

The Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 5000mAh battery, which can last a whole day with regular usage, thanks to the One UI software. The Korean tech giant is offering the same 5000mAh battery for the last three generations of the Galaxy S flagship lineup.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra came with a 5000mAh battery. On contrary, the company has also introduced the Galaxy M51 smartphone with a monstrous 7000mAh battery, but it didn’t continue with its successors.

Galaxy S22 Ultra 5000mAh battery

Non-Samsung flagships:

Talking about the flagship smartphone market, the recently released Google Pixel 7 Pro offers a 4,926mAh battery, while the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max 4323mAh and the OnePlus 10 Pro is 5,000mAh. Similarly, the Ultra model of the Galaxy S22 lineup packs a 5000mAh battery along with optimized software.

As there’s a charging speed race in the market with Chinese brands like OnePlus introducing up to 150W fast charging, what about battery increment? Should phone makers increase the battery capacity of their flagships arriving next year?

What do you think about it? Let us know through social media channels of SammyFans.com. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the vendors can still give a battery boost by optimizing the software and hardware aspects of smartphones.

Well-known tech YouTuber Arun Maini (Mrwhosetheboss) noticed that some of his Samsung phones are affected by battery swelling problems. There are billions of Galaxy devices lying around that seem to be a danger, while a spokesperson said that Samsung is “aware of this matter.”

According to the info, Samsung spokesperson Chris Langlois told The Verge that Samsung is “aware of this matter” and is “looking into further technical assessments.” He added that the company encourages customers with questions regarding their Galaxy device to contact their local Customer Service representative.

Last month, YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss found that among more than 600 smartphones in his collection the Galaxy Note 8’s battery had swelled to a dangerous level and cracked the back. Later on, he found that the battery of Galaxy S6 and S10 series phones had also bulged.

TheVerge also talked to Arthur Shi, senior technical writer at iFixit about the smartphone’s battery swelling problem. Shi said that the swelling itself is not inherently dangerous, meanwhile, it’s a safety mechanism to contain the volatile gasses.

Samsung Batteries Swelling

iFixit’s technical writer also pointed out that electronic devices’ battery swell mildly every time you charge them and manufacturers have built specific tolerances into the battery wells to account for that. Technically, this point makes sense, but we still recommend readers visit an authorized service center if found swelled battery.

Shi said that iFixit also has a lot of phones with bulging batteries, including Samsung and Apple. When asked why the battery swelling problem is happening in Samsung devices higher than in other companies, Shi said it would take a lot of work to figure out.

However, the Chinese firm ATL (Ningde Amperex Technology Limited) has manufactured the S23+’s battery. The same firm is making batteries for the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable smartphones as well.

It’s worth mentioning that Safety Korea is a South Korean agency that certifies batteries and the S23 Plus battery has also been certified by the same authority. By the way, the Korean certification doesn’t reveal the battery capacity and other details, time will tell what changes Samsung’s going to bring.

As per the previous reports, the Galaxy S23 series will be packed with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset worldwide. The Ultra model is rumored to be equipped with a massive 200MP camera sensor, while the display panels might be more improved and power efficient.
