As reported, the final hinge concept will be finalized after a month of testing. So far, Samsung foldables used a U-shaped hinge, which is now getting replaced with a new waterdrop-shaped hinge. As soon as the final concept is confirmed, parts production is expected to begin in May through KH Vatech.

TheElec sources claim that the South Korean tech giant is likely to begin a final reliability test on the waterdrop-shaped hinge concept to be applied to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This kind of hinge supports both screens in close contact when a foldable phone is folded and lessens crease visibility.

In the recent past, Chinese vendors lowered the thickness of the hinge area to 11-14mm using the waterdrop-shaped hinge for foldable phones. Since the thickness of the phone reduced, there may be concerns with durability, hence, Samsung entered the hinge in rigorous testing.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable smartphone

For the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Samsung’s first goal is to reduce the thickness to 14mm or less since the thickness of Galaxy Z Fold 4’s hinge part is 15.8 mm. Ahead of finalizing the waterdrop hinge production, Samsung could carry out a folding test of 200,000 basic times and a limit of 300,000 times over the next month.

“When the product is folded 200,000 times, the durability of the foldable panel must be maintained within 15% of the initial strength to be evaluated as durable. It takes 4 to 5 days to conduct the 200,000 folding test.”

Post getting test approval, Samsung’s droplet-shaped hinge could begin assembling by KH Vatech. Furthermore, the device is expected to not feature any changes in specification and design, hence, Samsung may put the new hinge tech and lightweight design in highlight.

This year’s Samsung foldable phones could come with a new hinge design to lessen the crease visibility. Two trusted sources reveal crucial information about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 including waterdrop hinge, IPX8 rating, and no roll of BOE panels.

According to tipster IceUniverse, Samsung will use the new waterdrop hinge design in its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable phones. Similar to their predecessors, both will feature an IPX8 rating for water resistance, while there’s no upgrade on the dust resistance feature.

By using the new hinges, the South Korean tech giant will introduce its next-gen foldable phones with a slimmer form factor and less visible crease on the screen. This teardrop hinge design will help phones lessen the gap where the screen folds (center point).

In the recent past, it was rumored that Samsung will be buying screen panels from BOE to maintain the cost of foldables. However, the display search analyst revealed that there will not be any roll of BOE Display in Samsung foldables and Samsung Display will continue to supply its next-gen panels.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Flip

At CES 2023, the company showcased a prototype device featuring the waterdrop hinge design, which could be commercialized with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. From the original Galaxy Fold to the latest Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung used the U-shaped hinge, which makes the smartphone comparatively thick.

Talking about the S Pen slot, Samsung fans’ dream may remain a dream this year as well. Due to changes in thickness and increased cost, the company has altered its plan to bring the S Pen compartment to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Hence, you may have to carry the stylus as an additional accessory with Fold 5.

Additional Input:

Ross Young shared the advantages of waterdrop hinge design via BOE doc:

  • Less visible seam due to less waviness/change in thickness, slower slope, 57% less strain, 66% less waviness after folding to fatigue.
  • Consumes 51% less space
  • 0.3mm thinner
  • Smaller brightness and color deviations.

Samsung seems too fast, quite fast this year. Within November, the One UI 5.0 reached numerous Galaxy devices, and the same happened with the One UI 5.1 this February. There are no signs of Android 13L, but Samsung has begun the development of One UI 5.1.1.

Spotted by Twitter user @tarunvats33, Samsung is working on the development of One UI 5.1.1 software on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. The devices have recently received the One UI 5.1 update and the development hints at another big upgrade this year.

Last year, Samsung debuted the One UI 4.1.1 with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone, based on Android 12L. Google introduced the Android 12L, especially for tablets and large-screen devices such as foldable phones. The company is yet to announce Android 13L but the One UI 5.1.1 enters the development phase.

CheckFirm app spotted test builds on the Korean variants on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable phones. The recently released One UI 5.1 can be identified by “C” alphabet as the fourth last digit of Samsung’s firmware. And if you have a basic idea about Samsung’s strategy, you can’t take much time for verification.

One UI 5.1.1

Samsung is likely to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones with Android 13-based One UI 5.1.1 software out of the box. The next-gen foldable phones may debut in August this year, whereas the One UI 5.1.1 may be available for older Galaxy devices a month later of launch.

Most of the Galaxy devices (tablets and foldables) running Android 13-based One UI 5.1 will receive the next One UI update post-launch. It’s expected that the company might share the enhancements with the Galaxy S series and Galaxy A series smartphones too.

According to the info, Samsung Elec decided not to introduce S-Pen storage with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 foldable phone launching in the second half of this year. Reportedly, the research and development progressed, but, the problem of securing internal space had an impact.

Internally, the company has made the decision to provide in-built S Pen support in this year’s foldable, which has recently been pulled. From 2019 to 2022, the South Korean tech giant introduced four generations of Galaxy Z Fold smartphones, while the S Pen’s arrival won’t become reality this year as well.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 S Pen

With the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung first brought the S Pen input support, which was continued by the Galaxy Z Fold 4 last year. In both models, S Pen can be used on the main screen, but, you need to carry the gadget in a case as an additional accessory.

S Pen’s arrival on Galaxy foldable phone is possible but it will become thicker, which Samsung doesn’t want to make at the moment. It is also reported that when the Pen is built in, the cost burden, such as the increase in factory price, is expected to increase, which is another hurdle.

“The hinge structure of the new foldable product has changed and the internal space structure has also changed, making it difficult to mount the S Pen,” an industry official close to this issue said.

Samsung never commercialized outward foldable display smartphones, but, it might be possible in near future. Not only outward folding, but the future Samsung foldable phone could fold inward and outward: 360 degrees. Let’s explore the prototype!

Samsung spokesperson told TheVerge that the company has a prototype device that features “Flex In & Out” display, which can rotate 360 degrees, meaning it can be folded inward and outward. The panel brings a different hinge design, which could have lessened the crease’s visibility.

Follow Sammy Fans on Google News

Moving ahead with the report, the Korean tech giant could replace the current hinge design with the “water-drop hinge” that could let the display form a looser shape — like a waterdrop — when folded inward along with putting less stress on the display.

The latest Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone uses a display that folds in just one direction — inward. Possibly, the company may commercialize this new kind of display panel and hinge design with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone.

Since the Fold 5’s tentative release timeline is August, the possibility of “Flex In & Out” display is less because of durability concerns. However, there is high chance that the next Galaxy Z Fold model could come with this new waterdrop hinge design to reduce the visibility of crease.

If the hinge design used by the prototype becomes reality, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could be defined as a masterpiece by Samsung in terms of design. This hinge could not only reduce the thickness but make the foldable sleek and lightweight.

The upcoming Galaxy foldable smartphone could be a big hit for Samsung this year. Reportedly, Samsung is developing waterdrop hinge design, which will be applied in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 device to make the display crease invisible.

According to the information, Samsung plans to bring a waterdrop type display structure (hinge) to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This new technology is reportedly designed to make the display folded in a waterdrop shape to widen the screen wrinkles that we say crease.

Internally, Samsung named this technology a “dumbbell” type hinge because the shape of the display resembles a water drop. Once folded, this new hinge structure makes it possible for both display sides to come into contact without gaps.

Samsung Waterdrop hinge

As per the information, the South Korean tech giant has overcome the display durability disadvantages of waterdrop hinge design. Therefore, most likely, the durability of the foldable display made by Samsung Display will also be improved without leaving water resistance.

Samsung Waterdrop Hinge

Way back in 2016, the company reportedly secured this display hinge design patent, which could be finally commercialized this August. For the production of related parts, the company could pick up from its partner companies for the 2023 Galaxy Fold.

Samsung U-shaped hinge

From the first gen Galaxy Fold to the latest Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung released various foldables along with clamshell ones. All of these foldable smartphones use Samsung’s “U-shaped” hinge design in which, the centered area partially floats.

Samsung’s U-shaped design considers the durability of a foldable display. With a more severe degree of folding (radius of curvature) of the foldable display, more impact (pressure) is applied to the folded portion, which causes damage to the display.

I’m skipping the Galaxy S23 Ultra in favor of the next-gen Galaxy Z Fold smartphone. Over the S22 Ultra, I don’t think S23 Ultra would be a worthy upgrade, however, I’m planning to own a foldable eventually. The recent, Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumor suggests Samsung is making it a monster.

According to ThePixel report, Samsung has slightly increased the height of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone, which could be 158.5mm. The report specifically mentions that the width of the next Fold could be 67.5mm (14.5mm thickness) when folded and 128.5mm (6.5 thickness) in unfolded state.

Follow Sammy Fans on Google News

Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Korean tech giant has increased the height of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone by 0.3mm, whereas the weight is 275 grams and thickness is increased by 0.4mm in a folded state. At the same time, the display crease won’t be there, as per the report.

Join Sammy Fans on Telegram

Moreover, the inner 2X Dynamic AMOLED display of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could expand to 7.6 inches with a resolution of 1768 x 2208px. It could be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus along with conventional IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Samsung greatly decreased the appearance of display crease with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, the crease could finally be gone, starting the Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone, releasing this August. Foldable without crease doesn’t sound practical, but nothing is impossible at Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumor

When it comes to camera, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will have a big upgrade, which could reach the Galaxy S22 Ultra level. Reportedly, the upcoming foldable uses 108MP primary OIS camera with a 26mm focal length as well as Dual Pixel PDAF focus.

Furthermore, the 2x optical zoom camera will have a resolution of 64MP with 52mm focal length, PDAF and f.2.4 aperture. At the same time, there will be an additional 12MP ultrawide-angle lens with 12mm focal length and f 2.2 aperture.

To bring the S Pen compartment, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone could feature flat pen so the thickness would not expand further. Last year, Samsung also created a prototype of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which had a dedicated S Pen compartment.

Last but not least, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 device could be equipped with Snapdragon 985 processor. Since the next Fold is under development, Qualcomm may also rename the processor building for the foldable. Until the official launch in Q3, 2023, there will be so many leaks and rumors, so get ready to fold!

Samsung made major changes in the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which further improved the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It’s time for the company to make major changes in the design and other aspects with its next foldable – Galaxy Z Fold 5. In favor of the next Galaxy foldable, I’m wondering to skip Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra with some eye-catching upgrades is launching next month, however, I’ve decided not to upgrade the S22 Ultra and wait a bit more. In August, the Korean tech giant would unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 5 along with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphone.

Follow Sammy Fans on Google News

The company has already mastered the foldable segment, leaving all rivals in the dust. Hence, I’m eyeing the next-gen foldable smartphone as a better noteworthy upgrade over the Galaxy S Ultra. Apart from a 200MP lens, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has no major upgrades over its predecessor.

A recent leak just changed my mind. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 could be equipped with a custom Snapdragon chipset (Snapdragon 985 5G), which is fabricated on 4nm process technology. In addition, it’s going to fulfill the wishes of Note lovers by bringing a dedicated S Pen silo.

Since Chinese phone makers have joined the foldable phone market with their cheap devices having promising specs, on paper, Samsung must have to stay ahead in the race. That said, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could come with radical camera changes and possibly, Samsung could bring a completely new camera installation.

Compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 leaves behind in photography, due to hardware limitations. If the company brings a 108MP camera sensor with the next Fold, it would be great to keep foldable. And the under-display camera technology is already making everyday entertainment awesome.

Compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will have an upgraded chipset with better performance and power efficiency. I just wonder, Samsung should release its H2 flagship phones with the latest version of OS pre-installed so consumers can switch easily.

What do you think about the Galaxy Z Fold 5? Are you also wondering to make foldable, your next smartphone? Let me know through social media!
