Samsung waterdrop hinge could make Galaxy Z Fold 5 crease invisible
The upcoming Galaxy foldable smartphone could be a big hit for Samsung this year. Reportedly, Samsung is developing waterdrop hinge design, which will be applied in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 device to make the display crease invisible.
According to the information, Samsung plans to bring a waterdrop type display structure (hinge) to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This new technology is reportedly designed to make the display folded in a waterdrop shape to widen the screen wrinkles that we say crease.

Internally, Samsung named this technology a “dumbbell” type hinge because the shape of the display resembles a water drop. Once folded, this new hinge structure makes it possible for both display sides to come into contact without gaps.

Samsung Waterdrop hinge
As per the information, the South Korean tech giant has overcome the display durability disadvantages of waterdrop hinge design. Therefore, most likely, the durability of the foldable display made by Samsung Display will also be improved without leaving water resistance.
Way back in 2016, the company reportedly secured this display hinge design patent, which could be finally commercialized this August. For the production of related parts, the company could pick up from its partner companies for the 2023 Galaxy Fold.
Samsung U-shaped hinge
From the first gen Galaxy Fold to the latest Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung released various foldables along with clamshell ones. All of these foldable smartphones use Samsung’s “U-shaped” hinge design in which, the centered area partially floats.
Samsung’s U-shaped design considers the durability of a foldable display. With a more severe degree of folding (radius of curvature) of the foldable display, more impact (pressure) is applied to the folded portion, which causes damage to the display.
