Story created in Dec. 2022 | Samsung ships the best camera phones in the industry, and the latest beast is Galaxy S23 Ultra. Thanks to the innovative Telephoto camera sensor and software optimization, it’s now possible to capture images of the Moon, with just a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Today, we discuss how your Samsung phone’s Space Zoom photography feature works. Regardless, hardware is the key factor to introduce a huge zooming/magnification range, but, well-optimized software significantly improves the overall experience. That’s what Samsung does, others not.

Way back in 2019, Samsung introduced AI technology to the mobile camera when it launched the Galaxy S10 series. The company developed a Scene Optimizer feature that helps AI to recognize the subject and provide you with the best photography experiences regardless of time and place.

Specifically for Moon photography, Samsung Galaxy S21 series debuted even better optimization with artificial intelligence. Galaxy flagships starting the Galaxy S21 series recognize Moon as the target using learned data, multi-frame synthesis, and deep learning-based AI technology at the time of the shooting.

In addition, a detail improvement engine feature has also been applied, which makes the picture clearer. If you don’t want to capture photos using AI technology, you can do it by just disabling the Scene Optimizer from the camera viewfinder.

Data learning process for Moon recognition engine

Samsung developers created the Moon recognition engine by learning various shapes of the Moon from full to crescent, based on images that people actually see with their eyes on Earth. It uses an AI deep learning model to show the presence and absence of the moon in the image and the area (square box) as a result.

Moreover, the pre-trained AI models can detect lunar areas even if other lunar images that have not been used for training are inserted. However, the Moon can’t be normally recognized if it is covered by a cloud or something else (non-lunar planets).

Samsung Galaxy Moon

Brightness control process

Well, AI enhances photography of the Moon, but better results require powerful hardware part as well. As it’s difficult to detect a small Moon in regular AI photography, the Moon’s photography is possible from 25x zoom or higher.

As soon as your Galaxy phone’s camera recognizes the Moon in the high-magnification zoom, the brightness of the screen is controlled to be dark so that the Moon can be seen clearly on the camera viewfinder, alongside maintaining optimal brightness.

If you shoot the Moon in the early evening, the sky around that is not the color of the sky you see with your eyes, but it is shot as a black sky. The tech behind this function is that when the Moon is recognized, it changes the focus to infinity to keep the moon in focus.

Shake control

Starting the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung shipped the Ultra variants (S20 Ultra/S21 Ultra/S22 Ultra) with the capability of magnification up to 100x. When the user shoots the Moon with 100x zoom/magnification, it looks greatly magnified, but it is not easy to shoot because the screen shakes due to shake of hands.

For this, Samsung created a functionality called Zoom Lock that reduces shaking when the Moon is identified so it can be stably captured on your Galaxy phone’s screen without a tripod. Zoom Lock unites OIS and VDIS technology in order to maximize image stabilization to radically surpass shaking.

If you touch the screen at high magnification or shine the Moon without moving for more than 1.5 seconds to lock, the zoom map border (in the upper right of the screen) changes from white to yellow, and the Moon no longer shakes, making it easy to shoot.

Tips to take Moon shots in 100x zoom:

 1. After rotating the Galaxy in landscape mode, hold the phone with both hands.
 2. Check the position of the Moon through the zoom map and adjust it to the center of the screen.
 3. When the zoom map border changes to yellow, press the capture button to picture the Moon.

Learning process of lunar detail improvement engine

Once the Moon is visible at the proper brightness, your Galaxy Camera completes a bright and clear moon picture through several steps when you press the capture button. At first, the application double-checks whether the Moon detail improvement engine is required or not.

Second, the camera captures multiple photos and synthesizes them into a single shot that is bright and noise-reduced via Multi-frame Processing. Due to the long distance and lack of light in the environment, it was not enough to give the best image even after compositing multiple shots.

Samsung Galaxy Moon

To overcome this, the Galaxy Camera uses a deep learning-based AI detail enhancement engine (Detail Enhancement technology) at the final stage to effectively remove noise and maximize the details of the Moon to complete a bright and clear picture.

Moon filming process

Samsung’s stock Camera application utilizes various AI technologies, which are detailed above, to provide clear Moon photos through various processes. Once focussed, AI automatically realizes the scene being shot and uses scene optimization technology to adjust settings for Moon quality.

To make Moon photography stable and easier, the Zoom Lock function, an image stabilization function, is used to provide clear moon photos on the preview screen. Once the Moon is positioned within the screen in the desired composition, press the shooting button to start shooting.

At this time, the Galaxy Camera combines multiple photos into a single photo to remove noise. As result, a bright and clear moon picture is completed by applying detail improvement technology that brings out the details of the moon pattern.

Samsung Galaxy Moon

Update – March 12.

Samsung itself revealed that multiple processing techniques work before the Galaxy phone produces a crispy image of the Moon. Meanwhile, there’s a thread posted on Reddit that makes the shooting technology controversial, which shouldn’t be there.

Android 14 (One UI 6.0) update will be a big deal for Samsung consumers having an eligible Galaxy smartphone or tablet. Android 12 brought radical user interface tweaks, which have been refined in the Android 13 update. And we hope, the Android 14 will focus on performance and efficiency.

Samsung will introduce the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 software version for Galaxy devices this year. I can confirm that the next version will be One UI 6 as there’s no rocket science behind this. One UI is a mature software and the company is strictly maintaining the naming strategy.

One UI 6.0

Flagship Samsung devices ranging from the Galaxy S21 series to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 foldables are eligible for the One UI 6.0 update, based on Android 14. In addition, there are a lot of Galaxy handsets launched with Android 12, which are also on the list!

One UI 6 is becoming the biggest reason, which is forcing me to purchase the S23 Ultra, but, I’ll continue using my S22 Ultra as a daily driver. Upgrade to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be highly fruitful for me, since, Samsung won’t be taking much time to expand One UI 6 Beta for older models.

One UI 6.0 Features

All the Security and Privacy related features and improvements of Android 14 will be included with the One UI 6.0 update. Samsung doesn’t rely on Google’s Android when it comes to the user interface as Galaxies offer the best and clean user experience with One UI.

We are too away from the One UI 6’s tentative development timeline, but, Samsung should now work on app icons, stock launcher, quick settings panel, and notification panel. Most users want a radically renovated user interface in One UI, as it’s continuing with refinements and refinements.

One UI 6.0 Eligible devices

In the Galaxy Z series, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are eligible for the new OS. In the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S23 series will get One UI 6 first, however, it will also be rolled out to the Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy S21 series (FE included).

Samsung offers two major Android upgrades to every Galaxy device (from Galaxy A, M, and F lineups). It means, if your device launched with Android 12 out of the box, it will surely get the Android 14 upgrade. Some A series devices are also eligible for three OS upgrades, hence, check the complete list below:

One UI 6.0 Release Date

Within 2022, the company rolled out the One UI 5.0 update for almost all eligible Galaxy models. And February became a great month for flagship Galaxy devices that received the One UI 5.1 feature drop update. It’s difficult to commit release date of One UI 6.0, while the timeline should be early October.

Post completion of the One UI 5.0 rollout, Samsung promised that it will further strengthen its collaboration with chip makers (i.e. Qualcomm) and Google. As promised, this year, the company will try to deploy One UI even faster and more reliable software for Galaxy.

On October 12, Samsung officially introduced the One UI 5.0 iteration and showcased new features and changes. This new Android 13 OS skin comes with substantial user interface advancements and useful functionalities to provide you with a better user experience.

The Galaxy S22 lineup started getting Stable One UI 5.0 update in late October. Nevertheless, the company amazingly achieved the fastest Android OS deployment in its history. Within 2022, Samsung managed to nearly finish the One UI 5.0 rollout for eligible Galaxy devices.

We’ve gathered which new features One UI 5.0 update brings:

Samsung Messages

With the One UI 4.1, Samsung enabled the capability of creating emoji pairs using the One UI exclusive Keyboard application. The new One UI 5.0 has the ability so you can delete unwanted emoji pairs with the new delete function.

 • Besides “Create” button, One UI 5.0 added a new Delete icon inside the menu that can be accessed by tapping the “+” button.

Lock Screen

Adding extra fun to customization, the One UI 5.0 now allows users to modify the lock screen by using “touch and hold to edit” feature. It lets you easily edit and customize your lock screen by simply touching and holding onto the screen.

 • Touch and hold on the lock screen to enter lock screen edit mode.
 • A “Touch and hold edit” option has also been added to the lock screen settings menu.

Samsung’s Android 13 skin lets you easily change your lock screen wallpaper directly on the lock screen. The newly crafted Wallpapers library has various options including Wallpaper services such as Dynamic lock screen.

How to use Dynamic Lock Screen

Dynamic lock screen is an amazing function that is available on Galaxy smartphones inside the Wallpaper services section. You can access this mode by following the steps written below.

 • Select Wallpaper in the “Touch and hold edit” mode on your lock screen > Scroll down to “Wallpaper services” > Select the arrow on the right > Select Dynamic Lock screen > select Apply.

How to customize lock screen clock style

The “Touch and hold edit” mode is not just limited to the above-mentioned two functions. It also allows you to change and customize your lock screen clock style and colors with easy visual modification tools.

More “how-to” for lock screen

Galaxy users can now edit and customize the notification settings by selecting the preview notifications. There are two options for lock screen Notifications including Icons only and Details, which show a preview as well so you can apply the best settings.

Samsung’s software has another lockscreen feature that makes it possible to open two apps (not any!) without unlocking the smartphone. You can swipe left or right to open apps directly from the lock screen interface.

The One UI 5.0 now allows users to change the apps for both “Left shortcut” and “Left shortcut.” You can assign two of the five available options that can be accessed without unlocking the phone including:

 1. Calculator
 2. Camera
 3. Do not disturb
 4. Flashlight
 5. Voice recorder

Notification Settings

Inside the system Settings, the Notifications section is now reorganized so you can find related menus on a single-screen interface.

Go to Notifications in the settings menu > select App notifications to view the apps list and easily toggle each app’s notification on and off.

You can easily add contact exceptions in the Do not disturb notification settings. Go to “Do not disturb” under notification settings > select Calls and messages > Select + to add contacts to the exceptions list.

In addition, you can also find DND exceptions for the app under Do not disturb > App notifications, by just simply selecting + to add apps to the exceptions list.

Gallery

In One UI 5.0 software, you can get quick access to organize Albums by selecting “+” on the top right corner under Gallery > Album. There are several options available including:

 1. Create an album
 2. Create a group, and share an album
 3. Auto update an album.

Furthermore, a new “View all” option has been added at the top for you to quickly access all your albums. And you will be recommended if there are people groups analyzed as the same person to integrate them into one group.

One UI 5.0 features changes

Modes and Routines

Samsung’s Android 13-based One UI 5.0 software system has now renamed the Bixby Routines to Modes and Routines – two different sections for user convenience.

You can utilize different modes to help you focus on your current tasks under the Modes tab, while the 2nd “Routines” tab allows you to add new routines or discover and manage existing routines.

One UI 5.0 features changes

Security and Privacy

Compared to the One UI 4.1, the One UI 5.0 update brings a major change to the security and privacy settings. With the latest upgrade, “Biometrics and security” and “Privacy” have been combined into one menu named “Security and privacy”.

I’m sure, you may have been counting days remaining in the Galaxy Unpacked, for S23 or the One UI 5.1. Why we don’t think two more steps ahead as Google’s about to introduce the new Android 14 operating system? Seeing One UI 5 vs One UI 4 vs One UI 3 rollouts, I hope, the One UI 6 could be close to perfection.

Over the past few years, Samsung made significant developments in its software department, especially the One UI and security patches. Galaxies get new patches ahead of Pixie’s, and the One UI 5 (Android 13) update rollout was truly unprecedented.

Within 2022, all eligible Samsung devices started to receive the Android 13-based One UI 5 upgrade. The availability issue remains as it is due to the company’s staged deployment method. However, no one can deny the fact that One UI 5 rollout amazed all of us, rivals excluded!

One UI 3

Months after Beta testing, Samsung began the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 upgrade rollout in December 2020, with the Galaxy S20 series as the first entry. All other flagships launched before the S20 got listed for January 2021, and some for February.

One UI 3

For non-flagship devices, the One UI 3 update was not praisable at all, as it lead consumers to wait for months. The premium Galaxy A handsets got scheduled to upgrade to Android 11 by April 2021, whereas the entry-level and budget ones continued receiving updates until September 2021.

One UI 4

Samsung Galaxy S21 series became the first to grab the Android 12 upgrade on both Beta and Stable channels. Moving ahead, the company revealed the One UI 4.0 upgrade rollout, which included all eligible phones and tablets with a tentative release timeline.

One UI 4

The roadmap promised One UI 4 OTA starting December 2021, which is planned to conclude in August 2022. The status of that One UI rollout still remains live as some remaining Galaxy devices are still getting the update in certain regions. In August, Samsung started One UI 5 Beta, based on Android 13.

One UI 5

With One UI 5, Samsung breaks all of its records with the fastest Beta beginning in August 2022, followed by entering Stable channel in late October. The company joined a lot of Galaxy smartphones in the Beta activity, which ran without worries.

One UI 5

The South Korean tech giant introduced the One UI 5 on October 12, while the Galaxy S22’s OTA was initially released on October 24th. Shortly after, the company released the upgrade plan and started to release the firmware for all flagships (S21, S20, Note 20) on November 7.

One UI 6

Samsung almost concluded its amazing One UI 5 update distribution in 2022 itself, and no Galaxy model is waiting to get the Android 13 with One UI 5.1 directly. Instead, the company is rapidly enhancing the One UI 5.1 firmware with some additional tweaks and advancements.

Seamless updates feature is expected to join Samsung with One UI 6 and the software department head already noted that the company wants to make future One UI updates even faster. Samsung praised itself, why not, with a Newsroom post, and promised to come up with even faster updates in 2023.

One UI 4.1 Features

Similarly, One UI 4.1 could add some polish to One UI 4.0 once it debuts with the Galaxy S22 series in February. We’re hoping for things like better virtual RAM management, better wallpaper-based color theme integration with Google apps, and more.

As the One UI 4.1 is a minor upgraded version of the One UI 4.0, which was introduced along with the Galaxy S22 series.

Better customization

First of all, the One UI 4.1 Galaxy Experience Film begins with introducing improved customization capabilities and usability across Samsung devices. While One UI 4.0 already brings better interface customization as per the user’s choice, One UI 4.1 takes the experience to the next level.

New Camera Features

The Galaxy S22 series phones are said to highlight major Camera improvements for low light and night photography, thanks to even optimized hardware and software. Accordingly, the One UI 4.1 embeds enhancements to the native Camera app with a new feature – “Tap, Hold & Swipe” to lock video recording.

Pro Mode, optimized Camera with social platforms

One UI 4.1 extends the Pro Mode support on each Camera lens available on the Galaxy smartphone along with further improving the features and making them easier to use. Moreover, the phone’s photography features now work with in-app Cameras of Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Gallery access via One Drive

Aside from this, the One UI 4.1 lets Galaxy owners access the Gallery’s images and videos across devices, thanks to Samsung-Microsoft collaboration on One Drive.

One UI Tab 4

Just like the One UI Watch 3 operating system, Samsung debuted the One UI Tab 4 for its large screen devices such as the Galaxy Tabs. This software is likely to be based on Google’s upcoming Android 12L operating system for tablets and foldables, offering a better user experience with added productivity.

[March 15] One UI 4.1 Camera Features

Samsung is going to provide several Camera features directly from the Galaxy S22 flagship series. The upcoming features are night portrait, pet recognition, lighting position editing, telephoto portrait mode, Director’s View, and an improved yet clean Camera UI.

]]>
On August 15, Google released the Android 13 update for Pixel devices, while Samsung started the One UI 5.0 Beta testing program for the Galaxy devices earlier this month. Google confirmed that the stable Android 13 update coming to your Galaxy devices “later this year.”

Samsung will surely start bringing the Android 13 update as One UI 5.0 to some eligible Galaxy devices later this year. Meanwhile, the company has already showcased most of the new features of this major upgrade including stackable widgets, more Color Palettes, optional call backgrounds for each contact, and much more.

Samsung Android 13 Release Date?

As always, Samsung has not shared the release date of the Galaxy Android 13 update. Well, we can accurately speculate when will Samsung release the One UI 5.0 update atop the Android 13 OS for the qualified Galaxy devices, thanks to records of past rollouts.

Let’s have a look at the recent past:

On October 4, 2021, the US tech giant seeded the Android 12 update for Pixel devices and Samsung bring it to the Galaxy devices as One UI 4.0 in mid-November. Well, the OEM was not able to run the rollout seamlessly as bugs and issues forced it to stop update delivery, which later on resumed in December.

Aside from this, the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update took nearly three months to start rolling out for the flagship Samsung devices after the official debut of the base OS version. Seeing the big development with Android 12, we can expect that the company will start providing Android 13 to its flagships starting October this year.

Similar to previous rollouts, the South Korean tech giant will first upgrade its flagship Galaxy smartphones and then tablets. Later on, the company will gradually push the One UI 5.0 update to mid-range and budget phones in different markets globally.

Samsung Android 13 One UI 5.0 Update

Samsung Android 13 Eligible Devices

As of now, the Galaxy S22 series is just officially confirmed for the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update. Aside from this, Samsung has not said anything about the Android 13 update distribution to other Galaxies, however, a number of phones and tablets are already confirmed to get One UI 5.0.

 • Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4
 • Galaxy S22 series
 • Galaxy Tab S8 series
 • Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3
 • Galaxy S21 series
 • Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip, Flip 5G
 • Galaxy S20 series
 • Galaxy Note 20 series
 • Galaxy Tab S7 series
 • Galaxy A52 and A53
 • Galaxy A71, A72, and A73

Aside from the above-listed smartphones, more Galaxy devices that were launched pre-installed with the Android 11-based One UI 3.x software will be supported for the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update as Samsung provides at least two major upgrades to all Galaxies.

You can check our dedicated article for the biggest Samsung Android 13-based One UI 5.0 eligible devices list, which consists of Galaxy M, Galaxy F, and more lineups. One UI 4.0 Release Date – November 15, 2021

Samsung officially launched the stable One UI 4.0 software system based on Android 12 operating system. The company said that the One UI 4.0 update rollout will begin for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra phones from now on. Read more

Samsung One UI 4.0: Features

Based on Android 12, the One UI 4.0 delivers even more personal, safe and effortless experiences on your device. Featuring a totally reimagined interface just for you, new privacy features that are designed for your safety and put you in control, and more seamless ways to get right to your gameplay or even switch to a new device.

Personalization – Starting with Android 12 on Pixel devices, you’ll be able to completely personalize your phone with a custom color palette and redesigned widgets. Using what we call color extraction, you choose your wallpaper and the system automatically determines which colors are dominant, which ones are complementary and which ones just look great. It then applies those colors across the entire OS: the notification shade, the lock screen, the volume controls, new widgets and much more.

Fluid motion and animations – From the moment you pick up an Android 12 device, you’ll feel how it comes alive with every tap, swipe and scroll. Your phone quickly responds to your touch with smooth motion and animations.

We’ve also simplified interactions and recrafted the entire underlying system to make your experience more fluid and efficient. Your Android devices are now faster and more responsive with better power efficiency so you can use your device for longer without a charge.

This was achieved by some under-the-hood improvements including reducing the CPU time needed for core system services by up to 22% and reducing the use of big cores by the system server by up to 15%.

Redesigned system spaces – Some of the most important spaces on your phone — like your notification shade, quick settings and even the power button — have been purposefully reimagined to help you get things done.

The notification shade is more intuitive and playful, with a crisp, at-a-glance view of your app notifications, whatever you’re currently listening to or watching, and Quick Settings that let you control practically the entire operating system with a swipe and a tap.

The Quick Settings space doesn’t just look and feel different. It’s been rebuilt to include Google Pay and Home Controls, while still allowing for customization so you can have everything you need most in one easy-to-access place.

To make sure you always have help from Google at your fingertips, you can now long press the power button to invoke Assistant to make a phone call, open apps, ask questions or read aloud text-heavy articles.

Private and secure by design – Android 12 includes new features that give you more transparency around which apps are accessing your data, and more controls so you can make informed choices about how much private information your apps can access.

The new Privacy Dashboard offers a single view into your permissions settings as well as what data is being accessed, how often and by which apps. It also lets you easily revoke app permissions right from the dashboard.

We’ve added a new indicator to the top right of your status bar so you know when your apps are accessing your microphone or camera. And if you want to remove app access to these sensors for the entire system, we’ve added two new toggles in Quick Settings.

We’re also giving you more control over how much information you share with apps. With new approximate location permissions, apps can be limited to seeing just your approximate location instead of a precise one. For example, weather apps don’t need your precise location to offer an accurate forecast.
