The Galaxy S23 Ultra looks a lot similar to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and Google Pixel 8 Pro renders solidify that Samsung did right. Recently, @Onleaks revealed high-res renders of the Google Pixel 8 Pro smartphone, flaunting design refreshment and comparatively flatter panel.

Leaked renders revealed that Google’s upcoming Pixel 8 Pro flagship phone may introduce redesigned camera bar and a flat display. The camera bar matches with the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, while all the camera sensors are now placed in a single pill-shaped bar.

Similar to the Pixel 7 Pro, Google’s next flagship phone will have an ultrawide, a wide, and a telephoto sensor, as shown in the leaked renders. However, there’s a new sensor placed beside the LED flash, which remains a mystery at the moment.

Coming to the screen, the Pixel 8 Pro seems to have a flat panel, ditching the legacy of slightly curved sides maintained until the Pixel 7 Pro. Moreover, the display size may be reduced to 6.52 inches along with little thickness reduction.

Google Pixel 8 Pro Renders

Google also follows Samsung’s footsteps by taking design inspiration from the latest Galaxy S23 Ultra for the new Pixel 8 Pro. The Korean tech giant has continued the same rear design as the predecessor, but refinements are noticeable, which became an inspiration for Google.

Not that all, Google may have also liked that Galaxy S23 Ultra display with reduced curve edges, making the Pixel 8 Pro flatter, at least in early renders. Flatter smartphone screen benefits in multiple ways such as enhanced durability, better in-hand feel, and mistouch prevention.

Google Pixel 8 Pro Renders

Reputed brands like Samsung, Apple, and Google believe that radical design changes are not necessary to happen in the smartphone market every year. On the other hand, Chinese brands are introducing new and new design languages instead of focussing on usability improvements.

Launched back on February 1st, the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra offer a premium smartphone experience to consumers. Recently, Samsung Newsroom talked to the creators of the Galaxy S23 series to get to know the design story.

Here’s how the Samsung Galaxy S23 series’ distinct design came about:

Design theme – “Create the Essentials”

If too many unnecessary details are incorporated, resources can be wasted during the production process, so Samsung Galaxy S23 creators decided to retain only the bare essential design features, based on the true identity of the device.

The Samsung Galaxy S series is a product lineup built on the true essence of what premium design can be. For the Galaxy S23 series, we deliberated extensively on what elements would not only make for a great design but also how they would impact the world at large.

Samsung Galaxy S23 design

Signature design

Vanilla and Plus Galaxy S23 variants introduce thin bezels that are slim and balanced on all sides for users to better focus on their screens, while a curved metal frame both protects the screen and provides the user with a comfortable grip.

Adding to this, the camera contour cut design seen on the last year’s Galaxy S22 and S22+ was removed, and all three models of the Galaxy S23 series are now equipped with a single camera design to deliver even more consistency across the lineup.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra brings reduced side edges and extended flat surfaces even further. It not only provides a better grip but also provides more space in which the S Pen can be utilized and ultimately maximize the benefits of the large screen.

Camera’s distinct design

Samsung believes the camera design of a device has become a powerful way to distinguish a product and express brand identity. The Galaxy S23 series camera layout has stayed the same since the Galaxy S21 series in order to foster a unique design identity.

Meanwhile, the external part of the camera is a glossy metal while the internal parts have been processed with smooth hairlines to convey the camera’s powerful performance. The design of the inner elements, including the form, texture, and color, is inspired by traditional camera lenses.

Colors are inspired by nature

The Galaxy S23 series comes in four colors that are based on a concept Samsung calls “Shades of Nature”. The Green shade is reminiscent of a tranquil forest while Phantom Black embodies the silent strength of nature, and the bright Cream shade is warming to look at while Lavender captures the energetic nature of everyday life.

Besides, the company developed four additional colors under the concept of “Shades in Dream”. Exclusively available on Samsung.com, the Lime, Skyblue, Red, and Graphite provide online customers with some upbeat and futuristic shades.

Samsung is showcasing new technologies at MWC 2023 event, and the company has revealed that its Galaxy S23 Ultra model has accounted for 60% percent of the entire S23 pre-orders.

In an interview with CNBC, Patrick Chomet, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics revealed that Galaxy S23 is far better than S22 in terms of sales.

According to the VP, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra accounts for around 60% of the overall global pre-orders of the entire S23 lineup. These are amazing statics and achievement.

“So we are on the premium segment, despite the difficult economic environment, we see a steady opportunity for us. And the reason is we are very competitive because we have brought a lot of innovation in that segment,” said Chomet.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the top model in the series, packs high-end specs, and a top-notch camera system. The South Korean phone maker has invested in heavy technologies from hardware to software to provide a better user experience for consumers.

Looking at the current trends, Chomet said that Samsung is moving towards double-digit growth in the premium smartphone segment in 2023. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is likely to play a pivotal role in the company’s growth.

“We expect, kind of, a healthy portion of the mix, to be skewed toward the premium,” Chomet added.

2022 was a tough year for Samsung as the operating profit of the consumer business fell 16 percent during the year. Samsung is still the largest Android phone maker in the world and its premium devices are in demand.

While talking about the popularity of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Chomet said that the pre-orders are an indication that the smartphone market in the premium segment is still very hopeful. As there are a lot of people considering new phones with quality.

Unwanted problems are not a new concern on newly released flagship smartphones. Some Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra users reported having problem with Wi-Fi connectivity. And the interesting part is that this problem appeared on the devices delivered on launch day.

General users (1/2/3/4/5/6/7) and an author of AC (via PA) are reporting that their Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone has no internet on Wi-Fi, however, Samsung seems aware of the connectivity problem. As per reports, the device stays connected to the Wi-Fi network, but the internet connection access remains unavailable.

Occasionally, the smartphone begins working through a Wi-Fi connection’s internet, while the duration doesn’t last too long. More specifically, it has been noticed that the connectivity problem is limited to the Ultra model, and the vanilla and Plus Galaxy S23 are working fine.

It’s worth mentioning that the issue is being reported for consumers having Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers. This is a new generation of wireless technology and unquestionably not purchased by users widely. The spread of the issue suggests that the S23 Ultra has no issues with older-generation Wi-Fi routers.

“Suspecting it had something with the WiFi 6 protocol, I swapped back to my old WiFi 5 router. The phone has since maintained the connection for more than 24 hours, where before it would drop the WiFi 6 connection within an hour or two.” – Reddit user -avenged-

Seeing the possible hardware problem, consumers reached out to Samsung support where a representative told a Reddit user that the next update would address the issue. It looks like, the company is already aware of the bug and working to deliver a fix firmware update to affected models.

In case the problem remains unfixed post-fix firmware installation, you may have to claim a repair or replacement unit under warranty. This may disappoint the shoppers’ community who is paying over a thousand dollars to own the latest Samsung flagship.

We will keep you updated on the matter.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra impressively survived the durability test by JerryRigEverything. However, the YouTuber now reveals that he has waited 8 years for Samsung to introduce an easily replaceable battery, which is applied in the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a replaceable battery

Nope, Samsung’s latest Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t have a removable rear panel, but the battery installation is impressively redefined. JerryRigEverything’s Galaxy S23 Ultra teardown video reveals that the smartphone comes with an easily replaceable battery.

Look-wise, the Galaxy S23 Ultra seems a clone of the S22 Ultra, however, Samsung made great refinements inside and outside. Jerry’s S23 Ultra teardown video shows you just need to remove the rear panel assembly, wireless charging coil, some screws, and ribbon cables.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra teardown battery

Notably, iFixit performed a similar teardown on the Galaxy S23 Ultra and found that several hands are required to successfully remove the battery. However, the YouTuber says that even a non-professional can remove the battery without any difficulty as Samsung made it one-hand work.

Apart from this, the teardown video shows crucial elements of the device including the wireless charging coil, S Pen recognition chip, speaker grille, and the vapor chamber cooling system. Usually, smartphone makers prefer using tight glue to install a battery, while, S23 Ultra’s battery is easily removable.

Galaxy S23 Ultra Specs

The Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with the world’s fastest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. Compared to rivals, the smartphone’s chipset brings overclocked CPU and GPU for exceptional performance and seamless gaming experiences.

One UI 5.1, based on Android 13, is greatly optimized with the hardware of the device so you can have an uninterrupted user experience. The camera capabilities are just awesome, with a 200MP camera already proven that lossless imaging is possible on smartphones too.

Samsung website mentions that the weight of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is 233 grams, but there’s a catch. A tipster unexpectedly discovered a weight difference between two S23 Ultra models in which one matches the company’s claim and the second is heavier in reality.

According to IceUniverse, the weight of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (standard variant) is 237.5 grams. At the same time, the Samsung-exclusive color variant of the device weighs 233.5 grams, exactly the same as the company mentioned in the official specs sheet.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Weight

The additional color coating could be the reason behind this weight difference between the Cream and Light Blue variants of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, such 4 grams difference is a big thing in smartphones as it can be noticed while handling both simultaneously.

In previous smartphone launches, Samsung mentioned that the weight may vary by network technology and processor. However, the processor variation doesn’t exist in the latest Galaxy S23 series as the devices are available with Snapdragon for Galaxy chipset worldwide.

Sometimes, certain factors such as airflow or air pressure make a minor impact on the weight of things, but the exact 4 grams difference hints at a lack of info on the specs page. Our team reached out to Samsung for comment on the possibilities of weight difference, while the reply is awaited.

The device comes with a new power-efficient display panel in order to provide you with better battery life. In reviews and comparisons, the battery performance of the S23 Ultra matches iPhone 14 Pro. Moreover, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy seems nicely optimized with the software.

In the camera department, the Galaxy S23 Ultra packs a 200MP primary sensor. It ensures your images capture in the highest resolution, which won’t loss quality and get pixelated while cropping. Other camera sensors also offer better performance, thanks to the new algorithmic upgrades in One UI 5.1.

Post-launch, Samsung released the first firmware update for the new Galaxy S23 series devices in various parts of the world including India, Korea, and the US. This software has reportedly broken the adaptive refresh rate feature of the Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones.

According to user reports (gathered by PiunikaWeb), February 2023 firmware update broke the adaptive refresh rate function on the Samsung Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra. Users report that the scrolling experience on Galaxy S23 is not smooth in various apps such as Google Play.

samsung galaxy s23 ultra

Since some S22 Ultra users are also facing lag issues in scrolling, this issue appears to be related to the One UI 5.1 software instead of the Galaxy S23 series. Anyways, users of the new S23 series are complaining about sluggish scrolling problems on various platforms such as Samsung Community and Reddit.

It’s worth mentioning that the adaptive refresh rate technology is applied in the Galaxy flagships to consume less power and battery juice. It works on different refresh rate functions per app, such as the Google Play Store and Galaxy Store reportedly support 60Hz, while others are full.

As the phone’s entire user interface runs on a 120Hz refresh rate, the 60Hz scrolling experience on unsupported apps looks laggy or glitchy. In that case, you just have the option to disable the adaptive refers rate feature from your Galaxy phone’s display settings.

We will update this story as soon as new input arrives.

According to tipster IceUniverse, the South Korean variant of the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone features greatly reduced camera shutter lag in 50MP and 200MP modes. Pay attention, there’s no difference between the Korean and international variants this year, thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy!

Today, Samsung started to roll out a new firmware update to the Galaxy S23 series devices. As per the info, the latest release improves the camera photography function and Gallery application. It shows the company is additionally polishing the overall user experience and camera of the new phones.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra February 2023 Update

Coming back, camera shutter lag is the delay that occurs when hitting the capture button until the final image processing. A faster shutter speed makes it possible to quietly capture the second and third shots, which was quite low in previous Galaxy phones.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra reportedly decreased camera shutter delay in the high-resolution image capture modes including 50MP and 200MP. It can be further boosted using the Good Lock’s Camera Assistant plugin, but you need to compromise with quality.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with a total of five camera sensors (four on the back plus a selfie snapper). On the rear side, there are four sensors including a 200MP main, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, a 10MP telephoto with 10x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor.

For selfies, Samsung uses a new 12MP camera sensor on the Galaxy S23 lineup, which sounds a downgrade on S23 Ultra, but brings meaningful improvements. Talking about nightography, the S23 Ultra will surely blow your mind as it turns night into day in photos, thanks to the new processor and software.

According to Samsung UK, if you shine a strong light on the display of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, some parts may appear to be squashed/pressed. The company clarified that this happens because of the pressing process for waterproofing and dust proofing, and it’s not a product defect.

No doubt, all Samsung products have passed strict internal quality inspections. However, lines after refraction of light may be seen at certain angles under strong light as the display panel consists of surface tempered glass, dustproof, waterproof layer.

As spotted by Android Central, last year, Samsung published a post regarding the same issue on the Taiwanese support page. The support page entitled “In bright light, the screen appears to see traces of stacked lines/arrangements.”

Through the support page, Samsung explained that the display panel is composed of many layers, including the surface toughened glass, which is directly covered on the display panel. It adopts a waterproof/dustproof structural design, which can effectively prevent the intrusion of external objects or liquids.

“This is a normal phenomenon and does not affect the function and life of the product, please feel free to use it,” says Samsung Support.

It’s worth mentioning that a limited number of Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra users noticed (via Reddit, Twitter & Samsung Community) a strange deformity of sorts on display (bubble-like effect on the bottom right or left). However, the display bubble is not seen on all Galaxy S23 Ultra units, even on our review unit.
