We might not see a physical SIM card slot in the next year’s Galaxy phones as the company might ditch the slot in favor of eSIM. Meanwhile, Qualcomm just announced a more advanced technology called iSIM, which will replace eSIM in future Android phones including Samsung Galaxy.

At MWC 2023, Qualcomm announced that future Snapdragon chipsets will bring iSIM technology in order to increase usable space on phones as well as battery efficiency. The company showcased a modified version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, featuring iSIM, which received GSMA certification.

Similar to eSIM, the iSIM technology introduces the same level of security, so there’s no confusion about safety. Another interesting thing about iSIM is that it’s 100x smaller than Nano SIM and a lot more power-efficient.

Since a Nano SIM card measures 12.3 x 8.8mm, the iSIM is whopping 100x smaller and measures less than 1 square millimeter, and resides inside a processor. In addition to vacating the SIM try space, the iSIM tech will allow vendors to bring phones with better resistance against dust and water.

The world’s first security certification of an iSIM by the GSMA follows several years of intense development work by Qualcomm and Thales. The new iSIM gives vendors and operators even greater freedom to offer their customers effortless over-the-air connectivity, and more exciting and accessible product designs.

Qualcomm quotes that the emerging iSIM form factor complements existing SIM and eSIM designs, and research suggests the market share to grow to 300 million by 2027, representing 19% of all eSIM shipments, according to Kaleido Intelligence.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Android smartphones debuting in the market continuously. The company may expand its Snapdragon portfolio with 8 Plus Gen 2 in H2, while, rumors about the next-gen chip started to emerge.

According to a wild rumor, Qualcomm’s next Snapdragon processor will give tough competition to Apple’s Bionic silicon. An alleged Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 prototype was tested on Geekbench and the results are just mind-blowing for the Android vendors camp, including Samsung.

Follow our socials → Google News, Telegram, Twitter, Facebook

Similar to the Galaxy S23, Samsung would use an exclusive Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC for the Galaxy S24 flagships. Meanwhile, the benchmark scores of vanilla 8 Gen 3 reportedly revealed a single-core score of 1,930 and a multi-core score of 6,236, surpassing Apple’s A16 Bionic.

“Alleged 8 Gen 3 chip has 29% increase in single-core performance and 20% in multi-core.”

It’s worth mentioning that the Android devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 secured average scores of 1,491 for single-core and 5,164 for multi-core. If the leaked benchmark results are true, it’s going to be a great year for Android smartphones launching with 8 Gen 3.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Geekbench Rumor

Besides, Qualcomm’s next Snapdragon processor is rumored to bring a unique 1+5+2 core configuration, dropping one more efficiency core from its predecessor’s 1+4+3 setting. Still, it’s likely that it would be 20% more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, thanks to TSMC’s N4P process node.

Since we are about 10 months away from the tentative launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, it’s not fair to blindly believe this rumor. The company may change its plan anytime and make amendments until the finalization of the chipset. Therefore, stay connected for more input.

TSMC is exclusively manufacturing Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets for Qualcomm. The biggest chip maker has given all of its orders to TSMC due to heating and performance throttling issues in Samsung-made processors including Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1.

Meanwhile, the latest report suggests that Samsung might get orders to manufacture some Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets on its 3nm process technology this year. According to the report, Samsung Foundry could manufacture some Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets on its 3nm GAA (GAAFET) node.

The US tech giant may not give a big share of production orders to Samsung as TSMC has a higher yield of around 75-80% per wafer. Samsung partnered with the US-based semiconductor company Silicon Frontline Technology which gained its 20% per wafer yield to around 60-70%.

Less yields lead to price hikes, which eventually raise the price of the device, due to which, Qualcomm has not completely switched back to Samsung. It’s reported that the Korean tech giant’s GAA technology could produce well-performing and power-efficient chipsets.

Through its own foundry, Samsung is likely to manufacture the custom processor’s components as per Galaxy S23 smartphones’ specifications. Since the Galaxy S23 lineup is going to use Snapdragon chipset worldwide, it’s an overclocked version, compared to the one released by Qualcomm.

About two weeks back, a tipster pointed out that Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor’s model number is SM8550-AB, while, the 8 Gen 1’s model number is SM8450. As Qualcomm used “AB” suffix in the model number, the Galaxy S23’s exclusive chip could have model number SM8550-AC.

Ending its multi-foundry strategy, Qualcomm is giving all the Snapdragon orders to Taiwanese TSMC since the second half of last year. Meanwhile, Qualcomm CMO hinted that Samsung foundry may join the collaboration again and start producing future Snapdragon chipsets.

According to the information (via TheElec), Qualcomm implied the possibility of collaborating with Samsung foundry again in the post-3nm process for Snapdragon chips. Next-gen Snapdragon chips (using 2nm/GAA process) may be produced by a dual system by Samsung and TSMC.

It’s reported that Qualcomm ended up using Samsung foundry due to the low yield of 4nm process and the former plans to entrust all AP production using the 3nm process to TSMC. Regarding the ‘3nm and 2nm foundry utilization plan’, Qualcomm CMO said, “We are continuing to maintain a cooperative relationship with Samsung Foundry.”

When asked if Qualcomm would maintain the multi-foundry strategy, Maguire CMO replied “yes”. “Qualcomm is too large to go with a single foundry,” he said. “The multi-foundry strategy is much easier in terms of supply, but it is also advantageous in terms of price competitiveness and scale.” “In particular, a multi-foundry strategy is more appropriate for expanding into business areas other than smartphones,” he added.

Qualcomm officially unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset at the Qualcomm Summit in Hawaii. Compared to the 8 Gen 1, the new flagship chip’s AI performance is increased up to 4.35 times and offers 25% faster performance and 40% improved power efficiency.
