When we take pictures or videos, we get images with suitable brightness through AE (Auto Exposure) operation which adjusts the exposure. However, when shooting indoors in backlit conditions or while looking out a window, bright and dark scenes coexist, resulting in images that are bright or dark depending on the scene.

Samsung Galaxy S23 HDR Technology

In Samsung Galaxy S23, the company uses the MF-HDR (Multiple Frame HDR) compositing method. It is a technology that takes pictures of different brightness by continuously adjusting the exposure, and then extracts the video information of the bright part from the bright picture and the video information of the dark part from the dark picture, and combines them into one picture.

Since the image is created by selectively combining bright and dark object information, an image with optimal brightness is created. However, since MF-HDR captures multiple consecutive scenes, there is a lag between scenes.

It means that a moving subject is prone to ghosting when the motion vector and image overlap, so it is recommended to use it in a shooting mode where the subject moves little.

On the flip side,  in motion picture mode, SF-HDR (single-frame HDR) technology is applied, and image sensor IDCG (Intrascene Dual Coverage Gain) technology is used to capture and synthesize bright and dark scenes simultaneously.

Image sensor iDCG technology generates electrons, that is, electrical signals, according to the brightness when light is incident on the photodiode of the image sensor, and the image sensor’s internal circuit (ADC: Analog Digital Converter and Logic Circuit) is used to convert the image sensor does for voltage. It goes through a process of change.

During the conversion of light into an electrical signal, electrons are placed in a cup called FD (Floating Diffusion) to measure the number of electrons. Determine a specific ratio based on the capacity of the cup and convert it to a voltage signal.

In the case of existing sensors, the capacity of the cup is limited to one, so it is difficult to take great pictures in environments with frequent changes in light and dark.

If the cup potential is large in a dark environment, it will be difficult to clearly express the dark part because the small light information cannot be converted into a sufficient voltage. It’s hard to articulate the bright parts well.

iDCG technology converts the existing one cup into two cups of different capacities, selects the smaller cup in a dark environment, selects the larger cup in a bright environment, measures twice, synthesizes in real-time, and HDR improves the performance of the image.

In the case of SF-HDR using 1 exposure, it is better for shooting moving images than MF-HDR using 2 exposures because of the sharpness of the subject’s movement. In addition to this, the company is preparing to bring HDR performance closer to the human eye through camera image sensors and ISP technology.

An ex-Apple employee revealed how Samsung is concerned to protect its display technology supremacy. The company naturally wishes to keep the biggest rival away from its cutting-edge display technology, by preventing Apple engineers to visit manufacturing facilities.

It’s reported that a team of Apple engineers went to South Korea to meet the Samsung display division’s team in 2017. Instead of a meeting, the company didn’t allow the workers to reach the display manufacturing units and even the office buildings.

Samsung reportedly asked Apple employees to return to their hotel rooms to communicate with their Samsung counterparts remotely. In addition, an incident happened in the past when Samsung was sending millions of LCD displays to Foxconn to be utilized in the Retina version of the iPad mini.

The US tech giant reportedly found a few minor defects in the screens, but Samsung declined to amend them, so Apple had to go ahead and deploy the supplied panels. No doubt, Samsung achieved mastery in display technology, which forces Apple to keep this unhappiest marriage alive.

Folks over at GalaxyClub revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series consists of three models including vanilla, Plus, and Ultra. It’s also reported that the upcoming flagship tablet lineup will make its entry at the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 launch conference.

• Galaxy Tab S9: SM-X710 (Wi-Fi), SM-X716B (5G Global), SM-X718U (5G US)
• Galaxy Tab S9+: SM-X810 (Wi-Fi), SM-X816B (5G Global), SM-X818U (5G US)
• Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: SM-X910 (Wi-Fi), SM-X916B (5G Global), SM-X918U (5G US)

As per the report, all three Galaxy Tab S9 models will be available in WiFi-only and WiFi + 5G network support. Like last year, the US availability of these tablets is almost confirmed, while there’s currently no information about further details and price.

In the recent past, it was revealed that the Galaxy Tab S9 devices feature the IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. It’s a big development by Samsung for its tablet portfolio as it’s going to be the first time when Galaxy tablets would support IP rating.

Apart from Android 13-based One UI 5.1.1 software, the Galaxy Tab S9 lineup is rumored to bring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. Compared to predecessors, the devices should feature better cameras, enhanced speakers, and refined performance.

Galaxy Glasses

The trademark reveals the brand name “Galaxy Glasses” which comes as the first fruitful outcome of Samsung and its friends. The name alone evokes smart glasses similar to Focals by North or the Ray-Ban Stories, while the full application also covers “headsets” for both AR and VR use.

GALAXY GLASSES trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of virtual reality headsets; Augmented reality headsets; Headphones; Smartphones; Smart glasses.

By submitting trademark applications, the South Korean tech giant indicates that it’s quite serious about the growth of this product portfolio. However, there is no confirmation or input on whether Samsung will bring slim smart glasses or a full-on VR headset experience.

Galaxy Ring

Galaxy Ring is the second trademark application filed by Samsung Electronics. The document description reveals that the Galaxy Ring device would collect health, fitness, and sleep data, in order to end the need of wearing a fitness tracker on the wrist.

SAMSUNG GALAXY RING trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of wearable smart devices in the nature of a smart ring for tracking, measuring, monitoring, and uploading health, fitness and sleep related information; smart rings; smartphones.

Since Samsung has not yet officially disclosed its plans for extended reality products, we have to wait for an official confirmation. It’s also a mystery whether the Samsung Galaxy Glasses and Ring are related to each other or will be commercialized as separate products.

Courtesy of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy’s improved CPU and NPU performance, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series’ Nightography shoots and processes images faster than the predecessor. Moreover, the One UI 5.1 includes algorithm and code changes for further enhancements.

While comparing the Nightography feature, the expected shooting time display on S23’s screen against the S22, you can see that the shooting time is significantly shorter and the image gets processed faster. Also, you can see that the shooting is faster even in photo mode.

Not only the main camera, but even when taking pictures of night scenes with ultra-wide lenses and telephoto lenses using the zoom function, they are quickly captured and processed, and the range of Nightography coverage has been expanded.

Improved noise/brightness

Usually, darker conditions result in more noise that results in less uniformity of the input data through the camera sensor. In the latest Galaxy S23, brightness in extremely low light conditions has been improved based on detail improvement and reduction processing for noise that hinders brightness enhancement.

1. The uniformity of sensor input data is improved by referencing neighboring pixels through an algorithm of multi-frame processing.
2. By improving the training technique of AIISP, the ability to reduce noise while maintaining detail has been improved.

Based on this noise reduction ability and detail improvement, brightness and contrast were improved by increasing the exposure of the sensor input and adjusting the tone algorithm. These minor technical improvements deliver a better overall photography experience on your Galaxy S23.

According to the Samsung community’s camera in charge, the Galaxy S23’s camera features (such as Astrophoto and Star Trails) are under review for expansion to older Galaxy flagships. Users asked the official about the possibility of Astrophoto and AstroHyperlapse (Star Trails) feature rollout to older models.

The official confirmed that the review is in progress and it’s expected that the rollout roadmap will be released by this week. Astrophoto is already available through the Expert RAW camera app on the Galaxy S22 line, which will make its debut on more Galaxy models soon.

Star Trails, which is technically known as AstroHyperlapse is a Galaxy S23-exclusive feature. However, it won’t stay limited to the S23 lineup for long as Samsung is already working to share it with more models such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Z Fold 4.

At present, it’s difficult to speculate which feature will be rolled out and while Galaxy devices will be eligible. The company is working to optimize the new features on older models, but hardware limitations end the possibility of a feature’s arrival, so, time will tell.

Samsung PM9C1A SSD is integrated with a market-leading 5-nanometer controller and the company’s seventh-generation V-NAND technology. It meets the growing demand for robust security measures as it supports DICE (Device Identifier Composition Engine) security standard created by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), a global organization that develops open standards for computing security.

Using a PCIe 4.0 interface, the Samsung PM9C1a is up to 1.6x faster sequential read and 1.8x faster sequential write speeds than its predecessor (PM9B1). The test values are as higher as 6,000 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 5,600MB/s, respectively.

In terms of energy efficiency, the PM9C1a is also up to 70 percent more power-per-watt than its predecessor which indicates that the new SSD can handle the same tasks using less power. The latest SSD will consume about 10% less power when the laptop enters standby mode.

Moreover, the random read and write speeds can support up to 900K input/output operations per second (IOPS) and 1000K IOPS. Samsung’s PM9C1a SSD will feature M.2 form factors (22mm x 30mm, 22mm x 42mm, 22mm x 80mm) in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities.
